Avoid bad smells and costly repairs – how to maintain your washing machine

To make sure your washing machine works properly and lasts for many years, it is important to clean it regularly. This prevents bad smells, limescale build-up and, at worst, a breakdown in the middle of a wash.

Why does the washing machine need cleaning?

Most people wash at low temperatures, which creates a breeding ground for bacteria that over time cause bad smells in both the machine and your clothes. At the same time, incorrect dosing of detergent and fabric softener leads to limescale deposits, which wear the machine's internal parts and shorten its lifespan.

With the right care you avoid most problems and spare yourself unnecessary repairs.

How to descale your washing machine

We recommend descaling your washing machine once every two months with our specially developed cleaning agent. Here is how:

  1. Pour 2 dl of cleaning agent directly into the detergent drawer
  2. Select a 95-degree boil-wash programme
  3. Start the machine – add the cleaning agent when the machine starts taking in water
  4. When the programme has finished, the machine is ready to use

The result is a clean machine with no bad smells – and no risk of limescale damage.

Preventive tips for everyday use

  • Run a hot wash (60–95 degrees) about once a week
  • Descale the machine 4–8 times a year, depending on how much you wash
  • Leave the door and detergent drawer ajar after use
  • Clean the lint filter once a month
  • Check the hardness of your water and dose detergent accordingly
  • Use a water softener with every wash – it lets you dose detergent as you would for soft water

This is kinder to both the environment and the machine, and it extends the life of the heating element and other parts.

Hard water – a hidden energy thief

In large parts of Zealand, and especially in Copenhagen, the water is hard – typically above 22 dH. This means limescale quickly builds up around the heating element. It increases electricity consumption considerably and can lead to overheating, causing the heating element to burn out.

What does it cost if you do nothing?

It is not only your finances that take a hit. You may have to take time off work, wait several days without a washing machine and spend time finding a repair appointment.

All of this can be avoided with regular descaling – a small investment with a big effect.

How to get the cleaning agent

Our special cleaning agent can be bought directly from us at:

Din Hvidevare Service – Mågevej 26, 2650 Hvidovre

You can also buy it from our technician when he visits you. Just ask – he carries it in the van. If you cannot collect it yourself, you can pay in advance and have it delivered with a technician visit in your area – at no extra cost.

A 2-litre container is enough for about 10 descaling cycles – almost 2 years' use.

Compared with the cost of a repair, or the inconvenience of being without your washing machine for several days, it is a small price to pay for peace of mind and a machine that works.
